Chemical Peels at Genesis Lifestyle Medicine

If you want healthy, radiant, lit-from-within skin, chemical peel treatments may be exactly what you’re looking for. Chemical peels can improve a variety of skin issues — everything from freckles to fine lines. Keep reading to see why chemical peels are one of our most popular treatments.

What is a chemical peel?

A chemical peel is a highly customizable skin treatment that uses a chemical solution to remove damaged outer layers of skin. Chemical peels come in many different types and strength levels. The specific formula for each patient can be adjusted to meet their exact needs and target their unique areas of concern. As long as a chemical peel is being done by a certified medical professional with experience, they are safe for every skin type.

How does a chemical peel work?

When the chemicals are applied to the top layers of superficial skin, they remove the damage and uncover the healthy, undamaged skin underneath. Not only does a chemical peel improve skin issues; it will also kick-start the production of brand-new collagen. The small amounts of acid in the chemicals create tiny injuries to the skin, which causes the skin to begin making new collagen — the protein responsible for firm, tight skin.

Chemical peel treatment details

When you arrive for your chemical peel, your skin will be carefully cleansed of makeup, lotion, etc. This will get rid of anything that may prevent the peel from working at full capacity. After your skin is cleaned, the treatment will begin. The chemical solution for the peel that has been pre-selected for you will be applied directly to your skin. During the treatment, your specialist will check in with you to make sure you’re comfortable.

As the peel begins to dry, you may experience a burning or tingling sensation. This simply means the acidic chemicals in the peel are doing their job and that the collagen process has been triggered. Please do speak up if it becomes too uncomfortable for you. We generally recommend a series of six treatments scheduled 3 to 4 weeks apart for the best results, depending on the type of chemical peel you have done.

Types of chemical peels

At Genesis Lifestyle Medicine in Nashville, Henderson, Las Vegas, Greenville, and Indianapolis, we use three of the very best chemical peels available: the Illuminize Peel™, the Vitalize Peel™, and the Rejuvenize Peel™.

Illuminize Peel

If you’re interested in a chemical peel but you’ve never had one before, the Illuminize Peel is a great place to start due to its gentle effectiveness. As a light peel, Illuminize is also a good choice for those who love low-grade chemical peels that provide a glowing radiance. This peel is popular due to its excellent results, small amount of peeling (if any), and minimal downtime.

The Illuminize Peel is great for:

  • Improving clarity and texture
  • Tightening and refreshing the skin
  • Improving minor skin discoloration
  • Providing a healthy, more youthful glow

Vitalize Peel

The Vitalize Peel is highly effective, yet will not damage the skin. Also a light peel, Vitalize is a popular choice for those interested in improving the signs of aging, such as sun damage and fine lines. It is also very customizable. Patients typically see improvement after just one treatment, and will not require much downtime with this peel.

The Vitalize Peel is great for:

  • Exfoliation
  • Improving the signs of age on the face
  • Clearing up acne
  • Helping with minor skin discolorations
  • Improving sun damage and melasma

Rejuvenize Peel

The Rejuvenize Peel was designed to include both an anti-irritant and a penetration enhancer, making it both effective and keeping discomfort at a minimum. Rejuvenize is a medium-depth chemical peel that removes the outer layer of the skin and the upper layer of the dermis. Most patients see visible improvement after just one treatment.

The Rejuvenize Peel is great for:

  • Improving uneven skin tone and texture
  • Softening fine lines
  • Lessening acne scarring
  • Addressing sun damage, melasma, and pigmentary changes

Downtime and recovery

If your chemical peel involves peeling during recovery, we will tell you this during your consultation. Peeling usually occurs 3 to 5 days post-treatment, and when it begins, you should be sure to keep applying sunscreen every few hours to prevent any hyperpigmentation. During recovery, you should also avoid saunas, baths, hot showers, and hot tubs for about 14 days.

It’s wise to stay out of the sun for one week post-treatment, and when you do go out, wear a strong SPF. The general rule after a chemical peel is to be very mindful and careful in the sun. Your skin will be more vulnerable to the sun’s UV rays after treatment.
